The 1959 Notting Hill riots saw the murder of Kelso Cochrane, the first acknowledged racial killing in Britain. But the story is not all bleak. Against increasing racial division came the black churches, the growth of communities and the beginning of the fight to be recognised.

Focusing on the education of black children, their search for an identity through their music and lifestyle, and the tragedy of the New Cross house fire in 1981.

The 1990s saw the emergence of a new black British identity, with black peers in the House of Lords and black celebrities in sport, entertainment and broadcasting.
