Welcome to the Beginners Dutch Grammar of Virtual Dutch. This grammar is aimed at students of Dutch at beginners' level. If you are an intermediate or advanced student interested in Dutch grammar, we advise you to use our Advanced Dutch Grammar. The Beginners Dutch Grammar can be used independently or as part of an existing course. Partners of Virtual Dutch use it alongside the beginners' course Lagelands.

The Beginners Dutch Grammar is organised like a traditional reference grammar. Use the tabs to navigate through the site. When you enter the Main index, you will find the grammatical topics arranged alphabetically. Just click on the topic you want to know more about. There is also a comprehensive glossary of grammatical terms. For each topic the grammar offers a link to the same topic in the Advanced Dutch Grammar.

Each topic is accompanied by a number of exercises. They are self check exercises that can be completed independently.

The Beginners Dutch Grammar was first written and produced in 2000 at the University of Hull by Agaath de Vries and Roel Vismans. In 2004-05 it was revised by Christine Sas at University College London (UCL) and Roel Vismans at the University of Sheffield. In 2008 self-correcting exercises were developed by An Vanderhelst at UCL and Roel Vismans as part of a Nederlandse Taalunie funded project to optimise the two grammars of Virtual Dutch. If you have any comments about this grammar, please send them to Roel Vismans.
